ShopDaily
ShopDaily is designed to bring traffic to Yahoo Shopping Taiwan, targeting young generation. As a UX designer, I worked with one visual designer on this project. ShopDaily was featured in Yahoo Techpulse, 2018.

I conducted some research and came across a report from Google’s search consumer insights. It reminded me that Google auto-completes a product search term with "recommendation". For instance, when users search for "watch", the first suggested keyword is "watch recommendation". I also examined the internal metrics and found that very few search terms include "recommendation" leading users to Yahoo Shopping Taiwan. Despite being one of the largest E-commerce platforms in Taiwan, we were not doing a good job of recommending products to our users.
It seems like if we do a good job on recommending products to the users, we will attract new users from the search engine. That also sounded like what younger people will do - find answers online! Next, I held a brainstorming session with designers, product managers and tech leads.
As a user, what kinds of product recommendation are valuable?
User-generated product reviews, influencers, professional reviews, bestsellers…
Then, we went through the pros and cons of each recommendation types. We also discussed what’s the uniqueness of Yahoo’s recommendation as well as feasibility.
After a couple of brainstorming sessions, ShopDaily came to life! It was designed to fulfill user’s needs in shopping guidance since it provided real-time top 10 best selling products in categories in Yahoo Shopping Taiwan. The interface surfaced minimal but critical product information so the user can easily scan through and purchase interested products with one click. In addition, ShopDaily was built with AMP which got higher scores in Google search engine.
The reason why we landed on using bestsellers as recommendations was because of limited editorial resources. However, we faced several design challenges.
How do we build trust on ShopDaily?
Users search for product recommendations from multiple sources. Within seconds, they’ve decided if they can trust the site or not. We tested various content to see which combination resonates with our target audience. Therefore, we added elements such as “unit sold from last month“, “update frequency“, and “consistent pricing“ in the later iteration. We also paid extra attention to the voice and tone to make sure ShopDaily speak to our users.
How do we build a unique bestseller experience?
We already have bestsellers existing in our products. Do we really need to design a new UI? After considering the user journey, we decided to design ShopDaily like a magazine. We assumed users were in the research stage which they have very different needs compares to users who were already in the Yahoo Shopping app. In Yahoo Shopping, we emphasized promotion and price. Whereas in ShopDaily, we want to let products be the focus - big product image with description in bullet points. After testing our first prototype, we added a fab as shortcuts to easily preview and navigate through the products. In July 2019, we added the “save” feature so user can always come back to follow the best selling products.
How do we attract the younger generation?
ShopDaily was designed with Mobile-first approach. It was built with progressive web app since we found in previous user studies that users didn’t want to install apps because they had limited storage in their smart device, especially the younger generation who cannot afford larger storage devices. The progressive web app allows users to have an app like experience without downloading the app.
In addition, from Forbs study in GenZ, we learnt that Gen Z just has a shorter attention span. Therefore, we designed the interface with large image size and bullet-point description to make it easier for user to scan through best selling products.
In March, 2021, Google launched “Best thing of everything“ serving similar user needs. A shopping guide that helps user get confident in making good purchase decisions. Love the interactions on the site. Kudos to Googler 🙌
